Keeping Pets Calm During Fireworks Season

by | Sep 13 2024

Updated: September 2024 Fireworks season is now upon us and whilst it can be fun for the family it’s probably not your pet’s favourite time. The combination of trick-or-treaters, loud bangs and unfamiliar smells can make pets feel very stressed and this can be traumatic for both the pet and their owner.

Tips on keeping pets calm during fireworks season

This bonfire night, make sure you’ve read these helpful tips on keeping pets calm during fireworks season:

  • Provide a den or hiding place for your pet whilst the fireworks are going off. This could be a crate, carrier, cardboard box or simply a towel over a chair. The den should be in a room where your pet likes to hide or feels comfortable. Include treats and toys in the den to make it more enticing. Covering with a blanket will help to further mute the sounds.
  • Playing soothing music in the background or having the TV on can help muffle the sounds of the fireworks.
  • Ensure all cat flaps are closed to stop pets from escaping.
  • Keep all windows and doors shut to reduce the outside noise.
  • Ensure your pet has been microchipped to provide identification if they manage to bolt or escape.
  • Walk your dog early in the evening, during daylight
  • The use of Vet IQ Serene-UM by Mark+Chappell can help naturally calm pets during this stressful time without causing drowsiness.
