In UK folklore, black cats symbolise good luck, yet sadly in reality they are not so lucky. There is a national problem with rehoming cats this colour and at any one time around 70% of the cats in need of rehoming will be either black or black and white.
It’s a problem shared all over the world and yet black cats have as much to offer as any other cat. Through no fault of their own, they are generally overlooked by members of the public looking for tabby, ginger or white cats because of the ‘cute’ factor, regardless of their personalities and most people tend to choose ‘prettier’ coloured cats. Even black kittens are the last to be adopted, while their more colourful siblings are chosen first.
In some countries, black cats are seen as lucky, but often it seems they are rejected on a superstitious basis, particularly with so many spooky images of black cats, which can be associated with bad luck and witches, especially around Halloween.
Added to that, black cats can be difficult to photograph so their pictures never do them justice.
